COLOR ENVELOP PROJECT |
I designed a series of 14 red envelopes (Red Packets) to address different types of insecurities and self-doubts faced by the younger generation in China nowadays. A red envelope (Red Packet) is a traditional Chinese gift form. As a custom, people usually put an amount of money in it and give it to others as a blessing of good luck during special occasions like weddings and Chinese New Year. As a custom, people usually put an amount of money in it and give it to others as a blessing of good luck during special occasions like weddings and Chinese New Year. With this project, I aimed to use the notion of “gift” to resemble the personal qualities that lead to people’s insecurity and challenge the traditional aesthetics of red envelopes and the notion of monetary gifts. By providing an alternative reality on the traditional cultural product, I believe there are more values a gift can bring than its conventional use.
A gift could also be a medium to communicate and convey meanings. Overall emotionally, I intended to convey a message that the qualities or characteristics you are insecure with or anxious about could also be seen as gifts given to you in a positive way. Visually, I branded each envelope with a narrative and a visual language based on the contextual research and my understanding of each concept.
